The Positive Influence of Photography on Self-Image
Back in 1975, there was a fascinating study known as The Murfreesboro Study that caught my attention. It focused on a group of fourth graders, specifically targeting those with below-average self-esteem scores. Now, here's where it gets intriguing: Over a span of five weeks, group one (control), went about their usual routine with no additional activities. Meanwhile, group two was handed Polaroid cameras and given specific tasks. These tasks ranged from capturing various poses to experimenting with different compositions and emotions to photograph themselves in. They were then tasked with creating scrapbooks using their prints each week.
When the tests were repeated at the end of those five weeks, the group that engaged with photography experienced a whopping 37% increase in their self-esteem scores. Yes, you heard it right—37%! Just from the simple act of seeing themselves in photos over a relatively short period.
Now, pause and consider this: What if your child could experience that same power of seeing themselves in photos every single day in your home?
Self-Esteem is Built on Belonging and Connection
Photography has this magical ability to strengthen the bonds within families. When your family gathers for a photo shoot, it's all about creating a special times together; laughing, joking, and making memories that stick. Then when you flip through those photos later on, it's like hitting rewind on all the fun you had together. Printed photos are a tangible reminder of the love you share and how tight-knit your family really is. Looking back at the photos will bring back the feelings of joy and connection, nurturing that sense of belonging and appreciation for each other.
This is also why it is important to stay positive and have fun on photo day.. and why my fun-filled adventure type sessions make that process so much easier. But that is a whole other blog post.
Hanging photos on the walls of your home is a non-verbal way of giving validation, and showing your kids they are appreciated and valued members of the family... which will boost their self esteem.
Self-Expression shapes Self-Worth
Encouraging individuals to express themselves through photography allows them to explore their creativity and unique perspective. This process of self-expression can foster a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Photographs that highlight one's strengths, talents, and unique qualities can contribute to developing a more positive self-image and confidence in one's appearance and abilities. To sum it up, celebrating your kids' uniqueness gives them the confidence to keep it!
The key to boosting that self-worth is getting those photos off your phone or computer and placing them somewhere they can be seen often and enjoyed - whether that is on the wall or in an album.
